refraction occurs when a light travels from one medium to another........it is the bending of light when it travels from one medium to another........when the light moves from denser to rarer medium, it bends away from the normal and when the light travels from rarer to denser medium, it travels towards the medium....

Refraction of light is the bending of waves when it enters a medium where it's speed is different. When a medium travels from a rarer to denser medium the light ray bends towards the normal and when it travels from a denser to rarer medium it bends away from the normal.

Example- The image of a pencil when dipped in water is different because the portion dipped in water bends away from the normal.
