The refractive index of a medium (n) is equal to the speed of light (c) divided by the velocity of light through the medium (v). Rearranging the equation allows us to see the relationship regarding v. The lower the refractive index, the faster the velocity of light.

Refractive index refers to the ratio of the speed of light in vacuum to the speed of light in a given medium.

The speed of light in vacuum is exactly 299792458 metres per second , ≈ 3 × 10⁸ m/s .

Refractive index = c/v

Snell's Law - sin i/sin r = μ1/μ2

i and r are the angles of incidence and reflection and μ1 and μ2 are the refractive index of the various mediums ..
