In the 19th century, scientists realized that gases in the atmosphere cause a "greenhouse effect" which affects the planet's temperature. ... Callendar argued that the level of carbon dioxide was climbing and raising global temperature, but most scientists found his arguments implausible.

Carbon - dioxide is a gas that contributes to the green house effect as it is a green house gas that is increasing in our present life and which leads to global warming. Global warming causes melting of polar ice caps which may cause floods in the nearby coastal regions and increases the sea level.
