Force is usually understood as a continuous push that's given to let's say a ball. While you keep pushing the ball, the ball keeps accelerating. Where as an impulse is a sudden push given to a ball at once. In this case the ball accelerates for a certain period depending upon the strength of the push and then stops accelerating or in other words it moves with a constant velocity forever. In short: As long as there is push, there is acceleration and we say force is being applied on the ball. If the push is sudden, we call it impulse and the ball accelerates only for a small period and then moves with a constant velocity.
