Relative density, also known as specific gravity is the ratio of the density of a substance to the density of a reference material.


The reference material is generally water for liquids and air for gases.


As the ratio would vary with temperature, the temperature at which the relative density is measure is always to be specified. For gases, the pressure is also to be specified

for example:for solids and liquids the standard is water at 4 degree Celcius.
