Relative atomic mass or atomic weight is a dimensionless physical quantity defined as the ratio of the average mass of atoms of a chemical element in a given sample to the atomic mass constant.

Answer

it is the total mass of all of the molecules together as one compound.

Explanation:

if you look at a periodic table, find the elements in your compound on the table at the mass number. if in your compound it has a 2 next to your element that means you have two of that element so you add that same mass onto your equation again (add for what the number says ). then add the mass for your other elements into your equation, the total for your equation is the relative atomic mass.

example:

compound: carbon dioxide - CO2

              mass

carbon: 12

oxygen: 8

relative formula mass: 12 + 8 + 8 = 28

you are adding 2 oxygens as the oxgen has a 2 next to it.
