Religions are shared collections of transcendental beliefs that have been passed on from believers to converts, that are held by adherents to be actively meaningful and serious and either based on (1) formally documented doctrine (organized religion) or (2) established cultural practices (folk religion).
That depends on how you define religion. Religions like Buddhism, Humanism, even Christian Universalists, are all fine and dandy.
What is incredibly dangerous, is FAITH-BASED religion.
Religious faith is asking people to believe first, and then get evidence. Faith is saying unique among all claims in the world, my claim is immune to the Philosophic burden of proof.
But when we believe first, we will ALWAYS get that belief confirmed. It's how our mind works. That's why the "Faith challenge" (AKA believe in Jesus and the Holy Spirit will provide all the evidence you need!) is so inherently dangerous and deceptive.
It will work for anything.
If a belief CAN be believed, then it will be confirmed.
