What is reported speech ?
➝ Indirect speech or Reported Speech is a means of expressing the content of statements, questions or other utterances, without quoting them explicitly as is done in direct speech.
➝ Reported speech is when we talk about what somebody else said.
➝ In indirect speech,we often use a tense which is 'further back' in the past than the tense originally usedThis is called 'backshit'. We also may need to change other words that were used.
- 1. Direct speech - "I worked in bank" said Daniel.
- Reported speech - Daniel said that he worked in a bank.
- 2. Direct speech - “I've been to London three times".
- Reported Speech: She said she had been to London three times.
- 3. Direct speech - Barbara said "I didn't realised it was midnight".
- Reported speech - Barbara said that she didn't realised that it was midnight.
Note : To convert into reported speech,we commonly use past tense and words in past tense such as said, that, had been, has been and 'ed' form of the verb.
