Endoplasmic Reticulum(ER) :

It consists of double membrane.One of its end is connected to the plasma membrane and another to outer nuclear membrane.Proteins and Lipids are synthesised by endoplasmic reticulum.The fluid filled between the membrane are called as Cisternae.There are two types of endoplasmic reticulum which are mentioned below :

(a)Rough Endoplasmic reticulum (RER) :

It is connected to plasma membrane.It looks rough due to the present of ribosomes attached to its surface. Ribosomes are the site of protein synthesis.the manufactured proteins are transported to different parts of the cell depending upon need.

(b)Smooth Endoplasmic reticulum(SER) :

It is the site of fat, lipid synthesis, protein and lipid together help in building the cell membrane called membrane biogenesis.It also helps in detoxification of Xenobiotic Compounds.

Answer:

Rough ER (RER) is involved in some protein production, protein folding, quality control and despatch. It is called 'rough' because it is studded with ribosomes.

Smooth E R (SER) is associated with the production and metabolism of fats and steroid hormones.
