The residual volume (RV) is the amount of air that is left after expiratory reserve volume is exhaled. The lungs are never completely empty. There is always some air left in the lungs after a maximal exhalation.

IMPORTANCE:

Residual Volume is important because it prevents the lungs from collapsing. Even after we have expelled as much air as possible (expiratory reserve volume) gaseous exchange is still occurring by residual volume in the lungs.
