when a single lewis structure is not able to explain the structure of a compound. it is explained using certain conoical structures and the resonance structure is taken as the hybrid of these structures.

resonance is a way of describing  electrons within certain molecules or polyatomic ions where the bonding cannot be expressed by a single Lewis formula. A molecule or ion with such delocalized electrons is represented by several contributing structures
