Any commodity which is used to satisfy human wants is known as a resource. Resources have worth or value. They have value because they satisfy human needs. For example, coal has value because it is used for generating electricity. Two factors which can change substances into resources are time and technology.

Types of Resources: In general, there are three types of resources or sources of information: primary, secondary, and tertiary.

Natural resources can be classified on the basis of their level of development and use, origin, stock and distribution. This natural resources are of types. They are Actual resource, Potential Resource, Biotic resources, Abiotic Resources, Renewable resources, Nonrenewable resources, Ubiquitous Resource, Localised Resource.

If we look around us, and examine the things we use— the food we eat, the clothes we wear, the transports we use, the means of entertainment, etc., all obtained from a resource available in nature and our environment. We are not using them in their original form. Man's needs have made him use more and more material for his purposes. He is constantly turning new materials into resources by using advanced technologies.

We can see that anything that is useful and has value is known as a resource.

A car, a television, computer, a grinder, a chimney all our resources obtained by the use of technology. Even human being is also a resource.
