Respiration is the breakdown of the respiratory substrate,the glucose which in turn evolves energy molecules like ATP and NADPH,which are used for cell activities and functions. All organisms from simplest prokaryotes to complex eukaryotes respire.

Respiration is of two types:

→Aerobic Respiration:In presence of Oxygen

→Anaerobic Respiration:Absence or lack of oxygen

There are three pathways of breaking down of respiratory substrate,

In all the breakdowns glucose is first converted into pyruvate,a three carbon molecule.

1. In presence of oxygen:

Pyruvate========>CO2+H2O+38 ATP

2. In absence of oxygen:

Pyruvate==========>C2H5OH + 2ATP

3. Lack of oxygen:

Pyruvate=========>Lactic acid + Energy

The third pathway is observed when an organism is suddenly in need for energy.

Over accumulation of lactic acid or lactose causes muscle cramps
