The persistence of sound in a big hall due to the repeated reflections of sound from the ceilings , floor and roof the hall is known as reverberation.

It can be reduced by making use of heavy curtains, sound absorbing materials and some other sound resistant materials.

Hope it helps..

What is reverberation?

A sound produced in a big hall will persist by repeated reflection from the walls until it is lessened to a value where it is no longer audible. The repeated reflection that results in this persistence of sound is known as reverberation.

How can it be reduced?

To reduce the undesirable effects because of reverberation, roof and walls of the auditorium are usually covered with sound absorbent materials such as compressed fiberboard, rough plaster or draperies. The seat materials are also selected having sound absorption properties.
