It's a filtration technique, where pressure is applied at the lower concentration so that fluid flows in the opposite direction: lower to higher concentration. If a water sample is impure, then per unit volume water concentration is less. If pressure is applied at this end, then water molecules leave behind impurities and cross over a permeable membrane and go over to the pure water side.
