In wastewater treatment, reverse osmosis is a water purification technology that, like ultrafiltration, uses a semipermeable membrane to remove larger particles from drinking water. ... In use, solute is retained on the pressurized side of the membrane and the pure solvent passes through it.

Answer:

The minimum excess pressure that has to be applied on the solution side to prevent the entry of solvent into the solution through the semipermeable membrane is called as osmotic pressure.

When a pressure higher than the osmotic pressure is applied on the solution, the solvent will flow from the solution into the pure solvent through the semipermeable membrane and the process is called a reverse osmosis.

Application of reverse osmosis:

Desalination of water: Removal of slats from sea water can be be done by applying pressure higher than the osmotic pressure, thus water can be made to flow through semipermeable membrane such as cellulose acetate and water can be used for drinking purposes.
