Answer: The revolt of 1857 or as British Historians call it, the Sepoy Mutiny was the first mass uprising by Indian people against the British crown. This revolt by the Indian people caused the shift of rule from the hands of the British East India Company to India being directly under the rule of the British crown. It wouldn't be fair to pinpoint a single instance for the revolt to occur. Multiple factors contributed to this mass uprising. The main trigger was grease used in the gun powder cartridge. There were rumours that grease used was made from fat, cows and pigs offensive to Hindus and Muslims respectively. Hence the built tension and this rumour set fire to the revolt of 1857 on 26th February 1857. As this was a major uprising against the British this revolt came to be known as the First War Of Independence.
