If all you are given is Molarity, then you also need to know the density of the solution to calculate molality, m (mol/kg solvent). The easiest way to understand the process is to assume you have 1L of solution which is 1000 mL. Think of the units of molarity and molality.

The molarity of a solution is the number of mols per kg. To find the molarity you figure out how many mols of the solute you added to the solvent then divide it by the mass in kg of solvent.

For example:

634 grams of HCl added to 4.5 litres of water. The molar mass (mass of one mol) of HCl is 1.008 + 35.45 = 36.46 grams. So you’ve added 17.39 mols of HCl to 4.5 kg of water. This means for each kg there is 3.864 mols of HCl, and therefore the solution has a molarity of 3.864.
