A ring topology is a network configuration where device connections create a circular data path. Each networked device is connected to two others, like points on a circle. Together, devices in a ring topology are referred to as a ring network.

Topology is the formation of a connection by connecting devices in different patterns.

A ring topology is a type of network where one device is connected to another on either end, eventually forming a circular connection, or rather, a ring formation. The connection flows in one direction throughout the ring. There isn't a need for a central device in this type of topology, unlike bus or star topologies. However, a fault in one of the devices can affect the entire network.

Other forms of network include:

  • Bus topology - devices are connected to a cable, also known as 'the backbone' of the network.
  • Tree topology - devices are connected to a central device.
  • Mesh topolgy - all devices are connected to each other.
  • Star topology - similar to a tree topology, the devices are connected to a central device.
