A rock is any naturally occurring solid mass or aggregate of minerals or mineraloid matter

TYPES OF ROCK

There are three kinds of rock: igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. Igneous rocks form when molten rock(magma or lava) cools and solidifies. Sedimentary rocks originate when particles settle out of water or air, or by precipitation of minerals from water. They accumulate in layers.

Rock

<font color=blue>

  • A rock is a solid collection of mineral grains that grow or become cemented together.
  • Some rocks are large while others are small.
  • Small rocks are called pebbles.
  • Every rock is made up of one or more minerals.
  • Geologists (people who study rocks and minerals) classify rocks according to the way they are formed.

The three main types, or classes, of rock are sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous and the differences among them have to do with how they are formed.

Sedimentary

Sedimentary rocks are formed from particles of sand, shells, pebbles, and other fragments of material.

Metamorphic

<font color=green>

Metamorphic rocks are formed under the surface of the earth from the metamorphosis (change) that occurs due to intense heat and pressure (squeezing).

Igneous

<font color=green>

Igneous rocks are formed when magma (molten rock deep within the earth) cools and hardens.
