What is role of co in the purification of Ni??

Solution :

a) Role of cryolite

It lowers the melting points of the mixture .

It makes alumina a good conduction of electricity

(b) When nickel is heated with carbon monoxide it forms a volatile complex nickel tetracarbonyl which on further heating at higher temperature decomposes to give pure nickle.

Ni+4CO330−350k−→−−−−−−−Ni(CO)4450−470k−→−−−−−−−Ni+4CONi+4CO330−350k→Ni(CO)4450−470k→Ni+4CO
