the rowlatt act was passed by the imperial legislative council agnaist the protest of lndian members which gave the power of detention of any political activist without court trial for two years. It gave them the extensive powers. lt was launched in 1919. Mahatma Gandhi decided to launch a Satyagraha agnaist the this act. there were many widespread protest agy this act but colonial government reacted with brutal repression. lala Lajpat Rai was killed because of his peacefy protest against this act in Lahore. and this led to violent protest in which 22 police officers were killed by the people

In August 1919, hundreds of Indians had gathered to celebrate the occasion of Baisakhi but the British had thought that they were making a conspiracy to overthrow their rule. As a result, the people were covered from all sides and fire was opened up. Hundreds of people were killed. This infuriated many Indian leaders. Rabindranath Tagore gave up his renowned title. This was the Jallianwalla Bagh massacre.

Soon Rowlatt Act was passed which allowed the British to arrest any person found criticizing the government without any trial.
