The Rowlatt Satyagraha. In 1919 Gandhiji gave a call for a Satyagraha against the Rowlatt Act, passed by the British. The Act restricted the freedom of expression and strengthened police powers. Mahatma Gandhi, Mohammad Ali Jinnah and others strongly opposed this Act.

ROWLATT ACT AND IT'S SATYAGRAHA:
In 1919, the British government passed thr Rowlatt Act according to which any person could be arrested ao the mere basis of suspicion. No appeal or petition could be filed against such arrests. This act was called BLACK ACT and was widely opposed. An all- India hartal was organised on 6 April 1919 . Gandhi launched the Rowlatt Act SATYAGRAHA. Meetings were held all over the country. The government took to repression and arrested Gandhi near Delhi.
Two prominent leaders of Punjab , Dr. Satyapal and Dr. Saifuddin Kitchlew, who were peacefully addressing a meeting , were arrested in Amritsar.
