Rowlatt Act :-

Rowlatt Act was an oppressive act introduced by the British Government in 1919. It gave the Government enormous powers to repress political activities and allowed detention of political prisoners without trial for two years. It was also known as Black Act.

The Indians showed disapproval towards this Act :-

1.Gandhiji called for a country wide ‘Hartal’ on 6th April, 1919. But he was arrested.

2.There were disturbances in  Delhi, Ahmedabad and Punjab. In Amritsar, two popular leaders, Dr. Satyapal and Dr. Saifud-din-Kitchlew were arrested. The people took out a procession in Amritsar to protest against these arrests, and demanded the release of their leaders.

3. A public meeting was announced for the 13th April. 19191, Amritsar against the arrest of their leaders.

4. People gathered there without arms and then General Dyer marched there and killed more than 1,000 people.

5. As the news of the ‘Jallianwala Bagh’ spread crowds took to the streets in many North Indian towns. There were strikes, clashes with the police and attacks on Government buildings.

Hope it helps :-)
