Rusts and smuts are fungi belonging to orders Urediniales (rusts) and Ustilaginales (smuts) which are normally basidiomycete fungi.  

Rusts have complicated life cycles which involves infection of two different plant species.  

Rust fungi attack plants for example ferns, gymnosperms and flowering plants.

If wheat plant is infested by Puccinia graminis tritici infestation could become definite during summer growing season when rust colored growth becomes visible on stems of infected plants.  

Fungal hyphae consists of groups of spore developing structures called uredinia that rupture the stem.
