rust is actually the product of the reaction of iron with oxygen in presence of moisture. it is also called hydrated iron III oxide.

rust is basically a reddish- or yellowish-brown flaking coating of iron oxide that is formed on iron or steel by oxidation, especially in the presence of moisture.

1. Iron should be kept outside in the environment.
2. Iron should be kept in moist atmosphere because reaction occur faster in aqueous medium.
