Rust is an iron oxide(usually red oxide) formed by redox reaction of iron and oxygen in the presence of moisture..It results in the corrosion of the substance targeted layer by layer and at the end, the targeted substance is completely eaten up( compltly corroded).
Rust can be prevented by using rust resistant alloys , galvanisation, cathodic protection , coatings and painting , bluing , by using inhibitors and even by humidity control.
