Ans. Also called iron rust. the red or orange coating that forms on the surface of ironwhen exposed to air and moisture, consisting chiefly of ferric hydroxide and ferric oxide formed by oxidation. 2. any film or coating on metal caused by oxidation.

Q. Give four ways to prevent rusting of iron.

Ans.  1. Keep away from moisture. 
2. Paint the metallic surface. 
3. Apply oil in order to provide an insulation layer b/w it and air. 
4. Wipe the surface with a soft dry cloth to remove moisture. 
5. Chromium plating. 
6. Heat treat.

When an iron object comes in contact with air or moisture it forms a layer of hydrated ferric oxide thus this process is called rusting of iron.
