Rutherford's Atomic Model :
The essential features of Rutherford's nuclear model of the atom are as follows :
- Every atom consist of a tiny central core, called the atomic nucleus, in which the entire positive charge and almost entire mass of the atom are concentrated .
- The nucleus is surrounded by negatively charged electrons. As atom on the whole is electrically neutral, the total negative charge of electrons surrounding the nucleus is equal to the total positive charge on the nucleus .
- An atom is electrically neutral. This is because the number of protons and electrons in an atom is equal .
Drawbacks of Rutherford's Atomic Model :
Major drawbacks of Rutherford's Atomic Model is that :
- It does not explain the stability of the atom .
- According to classical electromagnetic theory, atoms should emit continuous spectrum, but here we observe is only a line spectrum .
