It was discovered by Ernest Rutherford.

He gave many results from his experiment that most of the space in an atom is empty, positively charged nucleus present at the center, very small size of nucleus and high density of nucleus.


He observed that majority of alphabetical particles pass through the gold foil without any deviation, a few alpha particles deflected with small and large angles and 1 out of 12000, just turn back to the same direction.

Rutherford conducted an alpha scattering experiment on gold foil in 1911 called Rutherford's experiment.
When a stream of alpha rays is directed towards a very thin foil gold foil 
1. Most of the alpha rays went straight through the foil
2. Some were slightly deflected
3. Very few were deflected by large angles.
This is called Rutherford's experiment.
