This reaction is reduction or hydrogenation of unsaturated organic molecules (alkenes, alkynes, aldehydes, ketones) to the corresponding saturated molecule by passing vapours of the molecule and hydrogen over hot fine divided nickel.
Examples of the reaction are:
CH3-CH=CH2 + H2 −→−Ni/Δ CH3-CH2-CH3
CH3-CO-CH3 + H2 −→−Ni/Δ CH3-CHOH-CH3
