In order to prevent iron from rusting, we use the method of galvanization.

In galvanization, we apply a coating of zinc over iron. The zinc being reactive, reacts with oxygen to form a passive layer. And thus iron is protected.

In this case, the zinc sacrifices itself to protect iron. Thus it is called sacrificial protection.
