Answer:

A salt bridge, in electrochemistry, is a laboratory device used to connect the oxidation and reduction half-cells of a galvanic cell, a type of electrochemical cell. It maintains electrical neutrality within the internal circuit, preventing the cell from rapidly running its reaction to equilibrium.

It is the inert electrolytic solution in inverted U-tube with gelatin or agar agar for the purpose of converting it into semi solid form.

Some other important points on salt bridge are as follows:-

1. In any chemical change there is no involvement of inert electrolyte.

2. Speed of cation & anion to be equal then only salt bridge will be formed. Examples:- KCI, NH4NO3, KNO3 etc.

3. There will be no salt bridge formation if reaction of KCl is done with Ag+, Hg+2 or Pb+2.

4. Due to precipitation AgCl, TiCl can't form salt bridge formation.
