The Saminism movement emerged under the leadership of Surontiko Samin. He lived in a village (Randublatung) which was famous for its teak forests. He challenged the Dutch authority at the time when the Dutch surveyors came to classify the land between the public and salary land. He challenged the authority by saying that the administration has not created the wind, water, wood and earth, thus the administration cannot show their possession over the forests. This challenge forthwith changed into a widespread movement of villagers. The villagers protested against the Dutch government by lying down on earth and began shouting slogans such as “Kanggo” (I own it) while theDutch surveyors be-gan their process of classification.
