Sandy soil / Basic sand is the least fertile type of soil and only a few crops that have a few special traits can grow in this intolerable soil. It is loose soil so roots of a crop cannot depend on the soil to hold on to, hence that is where the important traits kick in. Sandy soil's composition is loose, infertile and dry with roughness too.
