What is saponification reaction? Why it is called so? Give the chemical reaction which is mentioned in NCERT class 10.

SAPONIFICATION REACTION: when esters are treated with sodium hydroxide, which is an alkali, the esters are converted back into alcohol and sodium salt of carboxylate acid.

It is called as saponification reaction as it is used in the preparation of SOAPS
