➡️ Soaps are sodium or potassium salts of long chain fatty acids.

➡️ When triglycerides in fat/oil react with aqueous NaOH or KOH, they are converted into soap and glycerol.

➡️ This is called alkaline hydrolysis of esters. Since this reaction leads to the formation of soap, it is called the Saponification process.

➡️ Esters can be cleaved back into a carboxylic acid and an alcohol by reaction with water and a base. The reaction is called a saponification from the Latin sapo which means soap.

➡️ The name comes from the fact that soap used to me made by the ester hydrolysis of fats.

The reaction of an ester in the presence of base to give sodium salt of carboxylic acid and alcohol is known as saponification and it is used in the preparation of soap.
