When light passes through atmosphere, it is first adsorbed by air molecules, dust particles, smoke and water droplets and then re-radiated in various directions.

This phenomenon is called scattering of light.

Scattering of light:-

It is the phenomena by which light is absorbed by small and tiny particles within a medium and then they emitted light rays at different wavelengths.

Light scattering is what it sounds like - rays of light get scattered (or deflected in different directions). However, different wavelengths of light will be scattered more or less depending on the medium they are travelling through or material they are hitting.
