what is schottky defect
Answers
Answer:
A Schottky defect is a type of point defect in a crystal lattice named after Walter H. Schottky. In non-ionic crystals it refers to lattice valency defects. In ionic crystals, this type of point defect forms when oppositely charged ions leave their lattice sites, creating vacancies.

Some points on Schottky defects:-
1. It is a kind vacancy defect.
2. Schottiky defect appears generally in ionic compounds in which radius ratio [r+/r-] is not far below unity.
3. For this defect, the cations and anion should not differ much in size.
4. For schottky defect, co-ordination numbers of the ions should be high, Examples of ionic solids showing this defect are NaCl, CsCl, KCl, AgBr etc.
Consequences of schottky defect:-
1. Density of the crystal decreases.
2. The crystal begins to conduct electricity to smail extent by ionic mechanism.
3. The presence of too many voids leads to lowering in lattice energy.
