Shielding effect. ... The shielding effect can be defined as a reduction in the effective nuclear charge on the electron cloud, due to a difference in the attraction forces on the electrons in the atom. It is a special case of electric-field screening.

The outer electron experiences two opposing forces-
1)Force of attraction from nucleus.
2)Force of repulsion from inner electrons.
The decrease in the force of attraction exerted by the nucleus on the valency electrons due to the presence of electrons in the inner shells, is called the screening effect or shielding effect.
The screening effect increases if the number of electrons in the inner shells between the nucleus and the outermost electrons increases.
