Secant

A straight line which intersects a circle at two distinct points is called a secant of the circle. In the figure, PQ is a secant of the circle with centre at 0.

Additional Information:

Tangent

A straight line that intersects (touches) a circle at only one point is called a tangent to the circle at that point. In the figure, the line BA is a tangent to the circle at A. The length of the line segment BA is known as the length of the tangent from B. and the point A is known as the point of contact of the tangent.

Diameter of a circle

A chord that passes through the centre of a circle is called a diameter of the circle. In the figure on the previous page PQ is a chord passing through the centre O. So, the line segment PQ is a diameter of the circle. The length of the line segment PQ is also called the diameter of the circle. In other words, the diameter is the length of any of the longest chords, Itself known as a diameter, of a circle.

Now, PQ = PO +0Q = radius + radius = 2 × radius. Therefore,

  • radius = diameter/2
  • diameter = 2 × radius.

Sector of a Circle

A sector of a circle is the region bounded by two radil of the circle and either of the ares that they cut off. In the figure, OP and OQ are two radil. They cut off the minor are PSQ and the major are PRQ. The region bounded by OP, Og and PSQ is a minor sector. The region bounded by OP, Og and PRQ is a major sector.

Segment of a circle

The region bounded by a chord of the circle and one of the arcs cut off by the chord is called a segment of the circle. In the figure, the chord PQ cuts the circle into the minor arc PRO and the major arc PSQ. The smaller part PROP of the circular region is called a minor segment, while the bigger part PSQP is called the corresponding major segment.

SECANT :

A line which cut through a circle at two different points like that in the picture. it is a chord extended infinitely in both directions. The biggest Secant of a circle obviously passes through the centre and it coincides with the diameter of the circle

Know More :

1] Chord :

A chord is a part of tangent between the circle. The chord is a line segment whose both ending and starting point lies on the circle.

See the figure .

2] Diameter:

The biggest chord of a circle is called the diameter. It Passes through the centre of the circle and divides the circle into 2 equal part. There are indefinitely many diameter in a circle

See the figure .

3] Radius :

A radius is a line segment between the centre of circle and circle. It is half of the diameter of the circle.

see the figure .

A radius = diameter/2

4] A tangent :

A line which meets a circle exactly at a single point is called the tangent of the circle. The point where it meet , is known as point of tangency.
