Semi colon :- It represents a pause of greater intensity than that indicated by a comma.

1. It is used to separate clauses of compound sentences when they contain comma.

Example :- She was a generous, loving mother; and we all adored her.

2. When the coordinating conjunctions and,but,or do not appear between the main clause and coordinate clause.

Example :- He led a noble life; he died in an honourable manner.

3. To separate a series of loosely related clauses.

Example :- Her heart was pure; her life serene.

Colon :- The colon marks a still more complete pause than that expressed by the semicolon.

1. It is used to introduce a quotation.

Example :- Bacon : "Reading is a good habit."

2. Before enumerations.

Example :- The different parts of speech are: Noun,Pronoun,Verb,Ajective,Adverb,Preposition, Conjuction and Interjection.
