Semiconductors can briefly defined as those elements which have no electrons in their conduction band of lattice, but when heated electrons excite from valency band to conduction band, when an electron leaves the conduction band, we assume some + charge may have occupied its space and term them as holes, which is equal to the magnitude of electron.

These electron when excited from valency band after some interval of time lose their energy and go back to valency band from conduction band to again pair itself with hole. This pairing of electron and hole is termed as recombination. Electrons need some energy to be excited from their valence band.

In short we can say semiconductor act as both conductor and insuator. It act as conductor when some heat is given and as an insulator at room temprature.
