Answer:

The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is a network of membranes that is present inside eukaryotic cells. These structures are responsible for the production and transportation of proteins, fats and other essential molecules required for the functioning of a cell.

When ribosomes attach to the surface of an ER, it gives a characteristic rough appearance; hence it is called Rough ER (PER). On the other hand, a smooth ER (SER) does not have ribosomes on its surface.

Functions of SER

Synthesises glycogen, lipids and steroids.

It helps in the formation of spherosomes/ Oleosomes.

Provides vesicles for cis-face of Golgi apparatus.

Explanation:

sER is a membrane-bound network of tubules (see Figs. 1-1 and 1-3) without surface ribosomes. sER is not involved in protein synthesis. Its main function is the synthesis of lipids, steroids, and carbohydrates, as well as the metabolism of exogenous substances, such as drugs or toxins.
