X and Y chromosomes are called sex chromosomes.
Explanation:
- In Eukaryotes, DNA or genetic material is packed in thread like structure called chromosome.
- There are 23 pairs of chromosomes in humans. 22 pairs are autosomes (same size) and the last pair is sex chromosomes. Pair of either XX (female) or XY (MALE).
- During fertilization one X chromosome from female and one X OR Y chromosome from male bind and develop into a new zygote.
- Sex chromosomes are hetero chromosomes that differ in both size and behaviour. X chromosome is larger than Y and has more genetic information.
