X and Y chromosomes are called sex chromosomes.

Explanation:

  • In Eukaryotes, DNA or genetic material is packed in thread like structure called chromosome.
  • There are 23 pairs of chromosomes in humans. 22 pairs are autosomes (same size) and the last pair is sex chromosomes. Pair of either XX (female) or XY (MALE).
  • During fertilization one X chromosome from female and one  X OR Y  chromosome from male bind and develop into a new zygote.
  • Sex chromosomes are hetero chromosomes that differ in both size and behaviour. X chromosome is larger than Y and has more genetic information.
  • Abnormal number of chromosomes leads to disorders like Turner’s syndrome, Klinefelter syndrome etc.
