most of the human chromosomes have a maternal and paternal copy,and we humans totally have 22 such pairs.but expect for one ,called the sex chromosomes .

women have the perfect pair of  sex chromosomes both called X .but men has  a mismatched pair in which one is normal sized X and the other  smaller one  Y.

so women have XX chromosomes while men have XY chromosomes

a child whether a girl or a boy would recive a X chromosome from the mother.it is the chromosome from the father which would decide the sex of a child.so if a child recives X from the father , it would be a girl

while if the child recives Y from the father it would be a boy
