Sex Ratio:
It is a demographic concept which measures the proportion of males to females in a specific population. The average natural sex ratio for humans is expressed as 105:100 which means that there would be 105 males for every 100 females in a population. Scientists are not 100 % sure about the reasons behind this fact but they suggest that one of the main reason behind this discrepancy is the increasing rate of sex selective abortions. There is a cultural pressure of having only male child in some of the countries. So, couples find the sex of their child through ultrasound and may abort the female fetus. Also, malnutrition of female infants in some cultures is also one of the reason of dominance of male ratio. There is also a possibility that female babies are not reported or registered to the government as compared to male babies.

The Sex Ratio is the ratio of males to females in a population.

For most sexually reproducing species, the ratio is 1:1. This tendency is explained by Fisher's principle. However, due to various reasons, many species deviate from an even sex ratio, either periodically or permanently.

Sex ratio is a valuable source for finding the population of women in India and the ratio of women to that of men in India. The major cause of the decrease of the female birth ratio in India is considered to be the violent treatments meted out to the girl child at the time of the birth and due to the biased attitude which is meted out to the women.
