When light is blocked by an object it forms a shadow. If you stand in front of a lamp you will see a shadow of yourself on the wall or ground because your body blocks the light.

When a body blocks the light partially or completely from falling it on a surface, shadow is observed. For example if there is no light in the room you find it black, similarly the absence of light on the surface makes it appear to be black and thus the shadow is observed in the shape of the body blocking the light from reaching the surface.
