A coupling is a device used to connect two shafts together at their ends for the purpose of transmitting power. Couplings do not normally allow disconnection of shafts during operation, however there are torque limiting couplings which can slip or disconnect when some torque limit is exceeded.

Hope this helps you...

Shaft coupling is nothing but mechanical device that is used to connect two rotating shafts in order to absorb misalignment between them. Coupling is done in different types like beam, bellows, chain, jaw, Diaphragm, disk, gear and grid, Old ham, Schmidt and Clamping. Shaft couplings are used for power and torque transmission between two rotating shafts such as on motors and pumps, compressors, and generators.
