The Sharp Committee Report, 1916:

  • Jammu & Kashmir was a Princely State during the British East India Company Rule in India till 1947 (Dogra Dynasty). Maharaja Pratap Singh ruled over Jammu & Kashmir from 1885 to 1925.
  • Many educational reforms were made by Maharaja Pratap sing during his rule, such as establishing government schools, Amar Singh Technical college, etc.
  • Another such decision was to appoint Sir Henry Sharp, The Educational Commissioner of India, to evaluate the condition of educational institutions in the state. This was called The Sharp Committee Report, 1916
  • Mr. Sharp provided the state with some guidelines after this thorough observation for the upliftment of Muslim education in the state.
  • The recommendations were not followed effectively by the officials but, the condition of education, in general, got better.
